Initially named Disappointment due to Alexander Mackenzie’s disappointment that it didn’t lead to the Pacific, the Mackenzie River is Canada’s largest and longest river system. Stretching over 2,635 miles, it winds through a diverse landscape of lakes, boreal forests, and arctic tundra. With tributaries spanning portions of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories, the Mackenzie is often referred to as “The Amazon of the North.” Its sparsely populated basin remains one of the world’s great unspoiled natural areas.
